One of the many things that site owners want, is to have a well ranked site for key words that relate to their target market.
There are so many SEO companies out there that claim that they can do this for a very small fee. However, this cannot be further from the reality of things.
Content is King
You need to ensure that your content is all related to the search terms you are looking to achieve good rankings for. Ther is no point in creating a knitting site and then trying to get it well ranked for those trying to find MP3's, just because it happens to be a hugely popular search term.
If your site has little or no content on MP3's, then don't even try and get well ranked for that key word.
Good corporate copywriting is not always (in fact usually not at all) Search Engine friendly. It sometimes takes quite a bit of convincing to the client, that their well structured information used in all their nice documentation, is not well structured for search engines. It is generally accepted that SEO writing uses a different "style" for web publications when compared with the corporate literature distributed in traditional print format.
Inbound Links
This is argaubly more important than any thing else to get your site "up there". It is no longer good enough to have just a plain old links section on your site. You need to link to sites with related content, on pages that carry content that will match your link partner. The same applies to your link partner.
Let's use the knitting example. When discussing yarns and wool on your site (hopefully you have a page on your site relating to this topic), invite sites that sell, or manufacture these items to link to you site and the page specifically.
In the section where you may have information on knitting needles, do the same there. This will help with "relavance" and this is a really important aspect of link exchange.
Do Your Research
When asking for links, make sure yoy visit the target site and find an appropriate page, or section, and suggest the link in your invatation. By normal standards, you should first add the link to your own site, before you solicit links from your target link partner.
